Good morning, afternoon or evening. Or as we say in New Zealand: Kia ora! Or, as we used to say in New York: Fuck you, asshole!
I’m Sarah. Somehow, you have stumbled upon my humble outpost floating placidly in the blogosphere ether - so, welcome! I am happy to be part of a small but thriving blogger network here in New Zealand, and if you happened to have found me as the result of a referral or link, many thanks. If it weren’t for you, my readership would probably still consist solely of my friends back in New York - many of whom still cannot point to New Zealand on a map. (I still love you guys though.)
I decided to make a new “About Me” page because I didn’t much like the old one. So here we go.
As I mention in my sidebar, I’ve been living in Auckland since mid-September 2006, though as of April 2007 I will officially become a Wellingtonian. I am 24 years old and I arrived here after spending five years surviving (I mean, living) in New York City. I graduated from NYU with a degree in Journalism and I have vague plans to return to grad school when I finally make it back to the States, though in the meantime I am plenty content to concentrate on lovely New Zealand and on how effing spectacular this place is…and, of course, on all the different ways Kiwis have invented to jeopardize their physical safety! Oh yeah, it turns out I’m a little bit of an adrenaline addict too - which is, I guess, only natural after having spent the last half-decade of my life dodging taxi cabs and fleeing from crackheads on the subway.
I’m pretty into the backpacking thing at the moment (only minus the raging alcoholism) and my Master Plan after I leave New Zealand is to spend several months wandering through Southeast Asia, India, China, the Trans-Siberian Railway, and Eastern Europe. This could happen anywhere from December 2007 to June 2008, depending on how long it takes me to save up enough cash. Some of the cities I plan on hitting: Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phnom Penh, Jaisalmer, Agra, Delhi, Kathmandu, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Lake Baikal, Ulaan-Baatar, Moscow, Kiev, Warsaw, Riga, Budapest, Bucharest, Skopje, Sarajevo, and Prague.
…Never let it be said that New Yorkers are not ambitious!
In the meantime, I spend most of my time writing, reading, and drinking admittedly excessive amounts of coffee. While in Auckland, I’ve worked at a certain well-known but must-remain-nameless newspaper which may or may not be the largest circulating daily periodical in New Zealand (gotta cover my ass just in case I write something incriminating on this blog). I’ve also grown increasingly fond of our national music scene and have a particular weakness for Kora. Other recent non-Kiwi favorites include Kaki King (a fellow NYU chick - props), Underworld, the Kooks, Guillemots and Kasabian. Subject to change without notice, of course.
That’s about all I think I can of to write about myself without delving into the phenomenally boring, so I would just like to thank the developers at MovableType for my awesome blogging platform, my friend Nikki for her early help in explaining PHP to me, and my ex-boyfriend whom I have not spoken to in months but who still apparently pays the five bucks a month to host my domain and has miraculously not deleted my blog (yet). And also thank you to all you fine New Zealanders who read my writing and (miraculously) tell me that it doesn’t suck. I would be honored to buy you a Tui someday.
